Has anyone ever caused you such severe hurt and pain that you thought even as a Christian you could never forgive them? Have you ever been so severely betrayed by one you loved you cried out to God for vengeance? Maybe a spouse, your beloved, in a moment of weakness ran off with another. Maybe a child or even a parent so betrayed you your heart said “No, I cannot will not forgive!”
And, maybe you would be right even justified to never forgive. Sometimes people do things so evil that forgiveness does not seem humanly possible in fact probably isn’t humanly possible. Let’s say in the case of a murder of a child. Who could ever forgive the evil murderer? Surely not I.
But sometimes those we love the most betray us the most. Maybe that child who leaves the Lord and lives a life breaking a parents heart by hating them for serving their Savior. Or a parent who does not love their child causing the hurt child to spend a childhood as if they were an orphan living in the very home of their parent. Who could forgive in either of these cases? I dare say it would be impossible except for the power in God’s precious Word.
I am speaking of Romans 5-6:18 where Paul talks about the walking and living your life as if you are dead to sin by putting the very sin nature Christ died to save us from on the cross whenever it tries to rear it’s ugly head.
Paul goes so far as to tell us in Romans 5:3-5 To glory in our tribulations!!! Ugh!!!What a hard word?!
5:3 And not only [so], but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
5:4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
So when we are betrayed and tempted to hate and withhold forgiveness of those who trespass against us let us remember that in order to be counted as Christ’s holy bride, who will sup at the marriage supper of the Lamb with her Bridegroom, it will be those who take their hatred, bitterness, and unforgiveness and put it back up on the cross to declare themselves dead to their sin.
The only way we can expect to be part of the Bride of Christ and to sup with Him at the marriage supper of the Lamb is to live the crucified life putting all the little foxes of sin in our hearts that would spoil our vine back up on the cross of Christ. That is the only way we may live here and now on earth the victorious resurrected life of Christ.
And if you are still with me thus far into this blog posting, may I encourage you to join me in putting to memory a very encouraging promise from God’s Word:
Zechariah 9:12 Turn you to the stronghold, ye prisoners of hope: even today I declare that I will render double unto thee. (KJV)
Wow! What an encouragement?! Wow! What a promise?!! And so with that I sign off for tonight and will talk to you “Prisoners of Hope” again soon. Your sister in the Lord, Judith
